Age discrimination at the workplace is a common occurrence. Today more elder people are available to enter the workforce due to the baby boom generation. Even still people older than 55 years old are being past up by companies because of their age and the stigma that surrounds older peoples capabilities.

Studies have shown that companies overlook elderly people because of:

Flexibility of younger employees
Slow routine habits
Younger managers are intimidated
Weaker health

There are many seniors 65 and older willing and able to continue working without a mandate of retiring at a certain age. But companies’ advertisements discriminate against elderly by stating the limitation for certain ages and durability of skills.

Age discrimination may be proven with our experience and help , if a company has promoted a younger employee rather than an elder employee with the same or better skill base.

A recent study done by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found In 2006 alone 13,569 age discrimination charges were received.

Did you know that the Age Discrimination Act of 1975 forbids discrimination based on age?

This Act applies to the work field public and private sectors of employment and also federal finance assistance programs supported by the government.

Age discrimination, especially age discrimination at the workplace, occurs frequently and even happens to some individuals on an everyday basis. While some may be faced with age discrimination at the workplace because they are under a certain age, it is beginning to happen even more with elder individuals who are finding themselves being judged based solely on the fact that they are above a certain age. The elderly are sometimes viewed as incompetent because of how old they are. This can greatly affect someone’s life in a negative way even though they may be perfectly capable of handling simple tasks.

Elderly individuals can feel discriminated against due to their age when it comes to any of the following:

Jobs
Driving
Applying For a Loan
Dealing With Customer Service
Running Errands

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 is meant to protect senior citizens from being discriminated against when it comes to:

Getting hired
Getting fired
Getting a job interview
Promotions
Salary
Benefits

Unfortunately, age discrimination at the workplace still occurs despite the act.

A lot of elderly people are simply too afraid to try for that promotion or even apply for a job due to the fear of being rejected because of their age.

Nobody should be discriminated against because of their age! Many older individuals have been turned down from opportunities, such as jobs, when they may have been much more qualified than the younger individual offered the opportunity instead. Being judged and treated unfairly due to age should not be tolerated and compensation may be awarded if age discrimination at the workplace has happened to you or someone you know.
