Elderly Advance Directives PDF Print E-mail

Most people do not want to discuss end of life care. Unfortunately, death is a part of life and will happen to each one of us eventually. Pre-planning helps our loved ones through tough choices in a difficult time. If you or someone you know is faced with a crippling health problem, it is wise to make any decisions now before incapacitation occurs.

Some complex choices in advance directives include:

Life support
Feeding tube
Pulling the plug
Executor
Living Will

When a person is seriously ill, it may be very difficult and overwhelming to make certain decisions. A health care power of attorney can prepare a legal document that allows another individual to make health care decisions on behalf of the ill person when they are unable to.

Some rights that patients have regarding their medical treatment include:

Patients are entitled to be completely informed on and about their illness
How the illness may affect their lives
Patients have the right to withhold or share that information with others
Patients have the right to make their decisions about treatment options.
Patients have the right to turn to family members, caregivers or friends for advice.

Elderly individuals should keep in mind that avoiding these life decisions will not make them go away. Think about the family and the entire burden that would be placed upon them if they were forced to make these life or death choices. It is important to communicate wishes about end of life decisions. To ensure communications were received correctly, make advance directives for health care today.
