Bedsores?
Neglect and abuse in our nation’s nursing homes is still a serious problem! While reform started in the 1980’s, unfortunately it remains a disappointing situation today. Sometimes, nursing homes are the only place for elder life care solutions. Whether it is the family’s busy life or their inability to be able to care for their elderly relative, nursing homes seem like the right idea to give adequate medical attention. Yet in most cases, from extreme to mild, there is abuse and neglect in these elder care facilities.
Nursing home laws are meant to prohibit any of the following:
Assault / Battery
Sexual Assault
Unreasonable physical restraint
Deprivation of food or water
Over medicating
Forcing an elder person to be confined in a room
Nursing home abuse may include signs of weight loss, malnutrition, bedsores, bruises, cuts, poor personal hygiene, medication errors, physical, emotional and sexual abuse and more. Unfortunately, many individuals working in nursing home do not always abide by nursing home laws.
Some common signs of nursing home neglect include:
Malnutrition
Dehydration
Failure to assist with personal hygiene
Unclean conditions living area
Bladder Infections
Nursing homes are required to give a standard of care that meets federal regulations, especially when federal funds are provided to supplement care for the elderly person. All states must comply with a minimum standard of care with the federal regulations. The Nursing Home Reform Act and Americans with Disabilities Act protects the rights of all nursing home residents.
